Managing Change
In the world of mergers, acquisitions and generational transition, change is inevitable. Companies will realize business benefits from these events when staff becomes a positive part of the new dynamic that change generates. By acknowledging the fear and stress that even a positive change may bring, businesses can open a dialogue that can help workers process their reactions. This enables those employees to more quickly embrace what change has to offer.
An effective change management process will:
- uncover the science of workforce and group dynamics
- capitalize on the enhanced human resources made possible through merger or acquisition
- address the strained work environment
- increase output and workforce satisfaction.
Studies have shown that successful navigation of a change process depends upon making the people involved feel included and informed. This is accomplished by a multi-level approach using stakeholder interview feedback and input from key leadership which is designed to identify common values in past, present and developing work culture. A healthy team dialogue serves as an important building block for a strong, healthy work environment. It also offers an excellent opportunity to build a shared vision for the future.
Employee feedback is provided to key leadership and management so that they can be trained to effectively guide the workforce through the continuing process of change. An important element of change management is to design a feedback and information sharing system which is appropriate for each work group or business sector. Guidelines about method, timing and reasons to share information are an important part of the design.
Coaching and consultation for individual managers and leaders can be provided on an as needed basis for six to twelve months following the conclusion of the initial process.
Thoughtful planning and consistent implementation will enhance the work environment of any organization facing the challenge of change. It is an important investment in productivity and employee stability.
